Sometimes eye ointments blur the vision temporarily. It is normal and takes a few minutes before normal vision is restored. Avoid the activities that require sharp sight until the vision clears.

 

If it is prescribed to use both the eye drops and eye ointment at the same time, administer the eye drops first, and after waiting for a few minutes, apply the ointment.

 

Follow the simple steps mentioned below for effective application of the eye ointment.

 

1.      Wash hands with soap and warm water, and dry.

 

2.      Uncap the ointment tube. Do not touch the tip of the tube to avoid any contamination.

 

3.      After tilting the head back slightly, gently pull the lower eyelid of the eye with the thumb and index finger of one hand to form a pocket. For self-administering eye ointment, stand in front of a mirror and support the hand against the face to keep it steady.

 

4.      Squeeze the ointment tube softly and apply the recommended amount of ointment, which is usually a 1/4 to 1/2-inch ribbon, to the inner side of the lower eyelid. Do not touch the tip of the medication tube to the eye or eyelid to avoid contamination.

 

5.      Look straight at the tip of the ointment tube to positioning it in front of the eye when self-administering eye ointment, Look up and away from the tube as soon as the ointment is applied in order to avoid blinking.

 

6.      When the ointment is applied, release the eyelid. Blink eye gently and close it. Keep the eye closed for one or two minutes. Do not rub the eye. Slowly rotate the eye to distribute the medication while the eyelid is closed. 

7.      Gently wipe off any excess ointment with a clean cotton swab.

8.      Affix the cap back securely on the ointment tube.

9.      Store the ointment tube in a cool and dry place. If refrigeration is recommended, please do so.

10.Wash hands with soap and warm water.
