Why make a choice of foods during periods?

You tend to feel bloated during those days. While some women get intense food craving for chocolates, fries, junks and many other eye satiating varieties of foods, others completely develop strange distaste for foods. The hormones plummet and so do cramps. There are certain foods that help you manage PMS and alleviate abdominal cramping to certain extent. This is why you need to make a choice of foods. So have a look at what to eat in periods...

Food rich in vitamins and minerals

Vitamin B6 is known for its mood elevating properties. So indulge in eating foods that are enriched with it. The best option is to have banana along with fortified cereals like oats and muesli. Lentils and legumes also contain vitamin B, prove useful during periods.

During your periods, you must get enough of vitamin C.       Eat lots of grapes, limes, grapefruits for this purpose. You can also have dark green vegetables, as vitamin K contained in them helps to overcome excess bleeding.

The minerals that help to get rid of bloating and water retention are potassium and magnesium. Therefore, eat freshly cut pineapple slices and sweet lime or juice out and drink. Pineapple also contains an enzyme bromelain that relaxes muscles to reduce cramping  Women with heavy periods much consider consuming iron rich foods like dates, spinach, oysters, etc.

A lot of women complain of constipation during periods, which worsens cramping. To avoid cramps get enough fibres from natural sources. Eat lots of beans, peas and leafy greens and fibrous fruits like prunes, peaches, apples, etc.

Snack on whole grain crackers. You can also have whole grain bread, rice and pasta anytime of the day. Complex carbohydrates will also help you deal with fatigue and weakness.

Get lots of calcium in your diet

You cannot afford to miss calcium rich foods in those days of the month. Eat broccoli, collard greens, kale, and fortified cereals. Avoid having to much dairy; instead choose from non dairy calcium rich foods. Organic soy milk, almond milk and fortified cereals would suffice your calcium requirement during periods.

Do not miss eating omega-3-fatty acids and proteins

Doctors say that omega 3 fatty acids lowers secretion of prostaglandin, which is the major culprit behind uterine contractions and abdominal cramps. So quite naturally, eating foods rich in omega-3-fatty acids help to get rid of torturous menstrual pain. Have salmon, tuna, lean meat, avocadoes, walnuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds, etc. You can pop in some seeds and nuts in between your meals.

Protein is also essential in your periods. Have lean chicken, boiled eggs, tofu, beans, lentils, etc. to feel better in this strenuous period.

Hydration is the key to comfort...

Foods apart, you must keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water. Feel free to drink sports drinks and health drinks also. In the morning, a glass of warm lemon water along with honey would keep cramps at the bay.

Try to Avoid...

While you might get irresistible cravings for chocolates, cakes, salt loaded fries, cheese coated pizzas, try to avoid eating them during periods. Limit caffeinated beverages, alcohol and dairy products.
