Home remedies for nausea and vomiting
Nausea is an uneasy sensation in the upper stomach that usually precedes vomiting. All of us at some point or other have experienced it. Nausea and vomiting could be side effects of some medicines and diagnostic tests while on the other hand it can result from indigestion, severe constipation, infections, etc.
However, you can get rid of nausea and vomiting by following some home remedies. We explain them for you.
Drink plain water
The first thing you should do is- drink a glass of water slowly. The water should be at room temperature. You can squirt a pinch of lemon juice in it. This will help your stomach to calm down.
Maintain electrolyte balance
Much of your body’s essential electrolytes like potassium and sodium are lost when you vomit severely. So it’s important for you to replace the electrolytes to get the much needed comfort. Get some electrolytes sachets from a pharmacy and start having it. You will be much in ease.
Boil some white rice with water in a container. Strain the water after the rice has been cooked. Let the water cool and then drink it. You can try this for few days to improve your condition.
Ginger works like a magic as it’s a natural anti-emetic. You can have gingerroot in any form. Chew the root in the morning with some honey whenever you tend to feel nauseas or sip some warm ginger tea. You can also mix some ginger juice with little bit of lemon juice to get the much needed relief.
Add one and a half teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of boiling water. Steep it for a few minutes then strain the water. Let it cool and then have it 2-3 times in day until you notice improvement.
Mint and peppermint
Mint is an excellent herbal remedy for nausea and vomiting. Get a handful of mint leaves and boil it in water for half an hour. You can either strain and have the water after it has cooled down or have it along with the leaves. Chewing the leaves also has similar action.
You can also try some peppermint tea or suck on peppermint candy.
Nausea and vomiting can easily get triggered by smell. Thus, if modifying the smell of your environment can beat these symptoms very well. You can light up aromatic candles or get an aromatherapy massage done, especially with lavender and peppermint. Try to carry tissues added with a few drops of peppermint or lavender oil and smell it whenever you feel nauseous while travelling. This helps to some extent.
Vinegar and apple cider vinegar
You feel nauseous and then tend to vomit. The repulsive smell of vomit can trigger more vomiting. To avoid, this keep vinegar or apple cider vinegar in handy. Mix one teaspoon of vinegar in a cup of water. Rinse your mouth immediately with it. Do not drink.
You can also start a therapy by mixing one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and honey in a glass of water. Have it daily to improve the symptoms.
Some more home remedies for nausea and vomiting...
- Chew cloves or aniseeds or cumin seeds whenever you experience the symptoms
- Drink some soda water or munch on a soda cracker
- Have coconut water regularly for long term effect
- Drink cranberry juice and not citrus fruit juices when you are fasting
- Keep OTC medicines for nausea and vomiting in handy. You can have them
Lastly, get enough rest and fresh air. Avoid eating spicy foods and caffeinated beverages. If you still experience uneasiness or your vomiting continues, go for a medical check up.
