Tips to prevent red eye

Red eye is the generic term used to define the change in colour of your eyes when they are irritated or rubbed hard or if you have gotten an eye infection like conjunctivitis, stye, etc.

Protect your eyes

You may be dealing with chemicals and hazardous gases at your workplace. So make sure you wear the special safety glasses provided by your company while working

Dry air, dust, sun glare, smog, and pollutants can irritate your eyes and make them turn red. Always wear goggles while travelling outdoors, no matter it is day or night.

The same applies to kids and adults to all age group who swim regularly. You should wear proper eye gears to protect your eyes from chlorinated pools.

Sleep enough

Often your eyes turn red when you do not get ample sleep. Thus, it is important for everybody to sleep sufficiently at night or nap in between to get over that tiredness and red eyes.

Avoid straining your eyes

Sticking to the computer for hours after hours is bound to make your eyes look red. You tend to rub your eyes; they water and then finally acquire a reddish tinge. So what you can do is- blink your eyes every 10-15 minutes and then splash cold water at an interval of one hour.

And for kids – insist them to get rid of watching television and playing games continuously to avoid such problems in eyes at tender age.

Avoid contact eye infections

Several eye infections spread via contact and the classic example is conjunctivitis. Although you are highly vulnerable to getting conjunctivitis if your family member or acquaintances have been infection, still you can cut down risk by taking the following steps:

  • Avoid using personal items of the infected person. This includes comb, eye liner, towel, handkerchief, pillows, razor and similar other day to day stuff
  • As a protective measure start taking OTC eye drops for conjunctivitis. They are usually antihistamines and anti irritants.

Wash your eyes with clean water

One of the reasons why you suddenly observe your eyes red in the morning is because of the water which could be contaminated. So check the container and get it cleaned periodically. Simply put, if you are unsure if the water is clean or not, simply use filtered or purified drinking water to rinse your eyes.

Remove make –up from eyes

Just as you remove make-up from your face it is equally important to remove makeup from your eyes. All cosmetics contain chemicals which have the potential to irritate your eyes when left over all night. So buy an eye makeup remover from a good brand to do this ritual before going to bed.

Use OTC tear drops

You will get tear drops in any drug store and they are absolutely safe. If your eyes tend to dry very often, you notice redness or they tend to itch then apply tear drops are per the instruction given on the packet.

Apply natural eye packs

Redness, tautness and eye bags can be very well managed with home remedies. All you have to do is cut 2 slice of cucumber in round shape and leave them over your eyes for 10 -1 5 minutes while keeping your eyes closed. Another useful remedy is- soak a cotton ball in rose water and apply it over your eyes in the same way.
