Encephalitis if untreated can be a fatal disease and cause irrevocable damage to the brain. When encephalitis is suspected the patient is first normally treated with an antiviral medicine called acyclovir. Acyclovir is very efficient in treating herpes virus and is often the first line of medication in severe cases of encephalitis.
After a proper diagnosis and ascertaining the cause of encephalitis, other antiviral drugs like ganciclovir or foscarnet or a combination of both can be used. Bacterial infections on the other hand can be treated by drugs like chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, ampicillin, and azithromycin.
In not so severe cases, encephalitis can be treated at home and may not need admission to a hospital. Simply taking in a lot of fluids, water and getting plenty of rest should suffice in curing a bout of encephalitis. Sometimes over-the-counter medicines like paracetamol may be used to tackle symptoms like to reduce fever and headache. In cases where the patient undergoes seizures and convulsion, medicines like Pregabalin or Midazolam to treat the condition maybe necessary.
