Symptoms associated with stomach pain

The pain could radiate from anywhere below your chest and above your groin. You can experience the pain either in left or right side of your stomach, lower or upper half or right at the centre. The location of the pain is governed by the underlying cause. For example appendicitis is attributed to lower right abdominal pain.

If you look for the type of pain, then your doctor would define it in the following ways, viz. “sharp, dull, stabbing, tearing, cramps, twisting, pressure, and bloating”. Other symptoms usually associated with stomach pain are nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, low urine output, dehydration, fever, etc.

Diagnosis of stomach pain

The purpose of diagnosing your stomach pain is to identify the underlying cause. For this, your doctor will physically inspect the pain pertaining to its location, type and intensity, followed by checking your medical history, food habits and general issues like constipation.

If your doctor suspects an infection then you need to undergo blood tests and stool tests.

Furthermore, depending upon the initial physical examination, other tests like X ray, ultrasonography, CT scan would be performed. You might also need to undergo chest x rays and EKG or ECG if abnormality in your heart has been suspected. Endoscopy, barium x rays and biopsies may be needed for stones, stomach injuries, cancer or any other serious condition that is leading to stomach pain.

Treatment of stomach pain

The treatment is totally dependent upon the test reports. If it’s a simple case of indigestion or acidity then your doctor would give you some antacids to control the symptoms.
