10 home remedies for cold sores

Cold sores, also called fever blisters result from Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV 1) infection.  Most commonly they occur on lips, inside the mouth or on fingers and nose. Cold sores usually disappear with a week or so, nevertheless, they can persist for long time. There are several home remedies for quick healing of cold sores and you do not require a medical treatment for that.

1.Wet it with ice

You can wet a cloth in icy water and cover the cold sore with it for 5 minutes. Otherwise, you can gently rub the cold sore with small ice cubes. Do this 2-3 times a day for quick healing.

2.Use OTC cream

There are several OTC medicines for cold sores and they are absolutely safe to use. Docosanol, Zovirax and Denavir are some common topical solutions for cold sores. The chemist would suggest you the cream. Benzocaine acts like a local anaesthetic and helps in reducing the pain and inflammation.

3.Apply petroleum jelly

Use pertroleum jelly over the cold cores. You can get it in cosmetic stores. Apply it few times in a day. This will keep your lips moist and help in speedy healing.

4.Chew Vitamin C tablets

If you get cold sores very often, then it’s the time to test the power of vitamin C. Whenever you sense that cold sores are going to pop out, chew 2-3 tablets with your meals for 2 days. The sores not only cannot erupt but the existing ones would also vanish.

5.Pop in zinc lozenges

Cold sores often result from deficiency of zinc. Furthermore, it gets triggered when you are stressed out. During such times, you can get rid of those painful red bumps by sucking zinc lozenges. You can buy them from a pharmacy.

6.Try Licorice

Licorice is enriched with glycyrrhizic acid which is capable of inhibiting viral infection. Make sure you purchase the pure variety; they are available as candies, powder or may be labelled as licorice mass. Have in small amount until the sores disappear. Remember to not have too much licorice.  

7.Heal with Lysine

L-lysine supplements of 500 to 1,000 mg when taken daily in an empty stomach are an excellent remedy for cold sores. L-lysine represses cold sores. You can also derive L-lysine naturally from foods like yogurt, fish, potatoes, etc.

8.Use Lemon Balm or Aloe Vera

You can buy a topical solution of lemon balm containing 1% of the extract to apply over the sores. The other option is to cover the popsicles with aloe vera pulp or aloe gel in order to suppress them quickly

9.Apply milk

Pour a little chilled milk in a cup. Dip a cotton ball in it and dab over the cold sores. Allow the sores to soak in milk. Repeat this few times throughout the day to get considerable relief.

10.Drink a herbal antidote

Collect dried version of 2 teaspoons of lemon balm and 1 teaspoon each of echinacea, calendula, peppermint, burdock root, and red raspberry leaves. Mix them in a pot and pour boiling water. Cover for 15-20 minutes. Strain and drink 2 cups in a day to get rid of cold sores.

Things to do and to avoid

  • Keep your lips moistened and protect from sun
  • You can have NSAIDs to deal with pain
  • Avoid sharing lipstick, lip balms, etc.
  • Get rid of stress, fatigue and anzxiety
  • Avoid foods high in L-arginine, including many types of nuts
