Guidelines for Intake of Complex Carbohydrates (Starches/Breads/Cereals)
Baked Goods
Baked goods that can be consumed:
  • whole grain enriched breads and rolls
  • low-fat or homemade muffins pancakes, waffles and biscuits that are made using polyunsaturated margarine or oil and low fat milk
Baked goods that are to be avoided:
  • butter or cheese rolls and breads
  • croutons
  • commercially baked biscuits, muffins, pancakes, pastries, sweet rolls, donuts, croissants and popovers

Pasta & Rice
Pasta & Rice items that can be consumed:
  • noodles
  • spaghetti
  • macaroni
  • brown rice
  • white rice
  • wild rice

Pasta & Rice items that are to be avoided:
  • pasta/rice prepared with whole eggs, cream and cheese sauces
  • canned or boxed noodles and macaroni dishes
  • canned spaghetti dishes



Cereals that can be consumed:
  • cooked or dry oats, bran and barley
Cereals that are to be avoided:
  • cereals with coconut
  • instant hot cereals
  • granola

Crackers/Snacks that can be consumed:
  • unsalted crackers
  • pretzels
  • popcorn prepared with air popper or mono/polyunsaturated oil

Crackers/Snacks that are to be avoided:
  • salted crackers or snacks
  • fried snack foods
  • any snacks or crackers containing saturated fats, coconut or palm oils, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats
  • cheese crackers or snacks
  • potato chips
  • corn chips
  • tortilla chips
  • chowmein noodles
  • commercial buttered popcorn
