Causes of low back pain
Low back pain can be acute or chronic.

Diagnosis of low back pain
Your doctor or orthopaedic surgeon would first conduct a physical examination, wherein the pain will be evaluated manually. You need to explain the symptoms properly to your doctor and then let him know about your medical history (disease, fracture, operation, etc.) and the medicines that you might be taking. In addition to that your doctor will be analysing your lifestyle factors that might be contributing to back pain.
Depending on the initial evaluation, your doctor will recommend diagnostic tests which include X ray, CT scan, myelogram) or MRI of lower spin and blood tests like complete blood count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate.
Treatment of low back pain
The treatment completely depends on the diagnosis reports and the underlying reasons. If the pain is usual, then your doctor might not prescribe any medicines but correction in lifestyle will be recommended. Some vitamin supplements containing vitamin D and calcium would be given.
The most common treatment for low back pain is with OTC non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Steroid injections might also be given to manage pain.
In case of fractures or other serious complication a surgery might be recommended.
Self care for low back pain
- Take enough rest with alternate ice and heat therapy
- Do not lift heavy weights or bend with a jerk

- Alternative therapies like acupuncture, massage therapy and chiropractic treatments often prove useful
- Stop smoking and lose weight
- Maintain a good posture while sitting, sleeping, working or driving
