Home remedies for abdominal pain

It’s important to first find out the source of the pain and then try the home remedies. However, pain in abdomen is generally a consequence of indigestion, acidity, gas, constipation, etc. And for women, abdominal pain is dominant during menstruation.

There are several home remedies that you can opt for to get the much needed comfort and they are:


Take compress with heat

This therapy can be done in different ways. You can roll a bottle filled with warm water over your abdomen or take compress with heating pad. Another wonderful option is- take a sock and stuff it with rice. Tie the other end with a thread or rubber band. Now heat it mildly inside microwave. Compress the painful areas with the heated rice.

You can also soak yourself in a bath of lukewarm water to get rid of menstrual cramps.


Have some lemon water

If you are regularly experiencing mild pain in abdomen after eating foods, then make it a habit to drink a glass of lemon water after meals. Squeeze half lemon in a glass of warm water and sip it. Continue this for a few days to notice improvement.


Enjoy chamomile tea

Chamomile is an excellent anti-inflammatory that helps get rid of stomach cramps due to gastritis, infection and even menstrual cramps. Get a packet of chamomile tea bags or dried chamomile. Boil some water and dip the tea bag or boil the dried flakes in water and strain it. Drink the tea warm. Have it twice a day to tone down the pain.


Treat yourself with ginger

Ginger is excellent for those suffering from abdominal cramps due to gastrointestinal disorders. You can have ginger or gingerroot in variety of forms. The best is to have 2 teaspoons of ginger juice or plain ginger tea with a zest of lemon. You can also cut small slices and chew them.


Drink peppermint tea

Peppermint or mint plays an excellent role in alleviating stomach cramps from indigestion, acidity, etc. You can either dip a peppermint tea bag in warm water and have the tea or steep some fresh peppermint leaves in boiling water. Strain the leaves, cool the water and sip it for immediate relief.


Chew caraway and cumin seeds

Caraway and cumin offer relief from stomach pain and nausea as well and improve your digestive ability. Post meals, chew some caraway and cumin. You can also soak them overnight in water and drink it next morning. Continue this therapy for few days. 


Follow the BRAT diet

BRAT stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast.  The National Institute of Health recommends this diet to eliminate stomach pain and diarrhoea. Call up your family doctor to know how to follow the diet in the right manner and whether it is suitable for you.

On the other hand, children can depend on CRAP diet (cherries, raisins, apricots, prunes) to soothe abdominal pain.


Pop in antacids or OTC antispasmodic

You can have antacids to combat indigestion and acidity problems. Spasms and cramps in abdomen can be sorted with OTC antispasmodic drugs. Check with your chemist and have the pill to receive the necessary comfort. You can also do the same on having unbearable menstrual cramps. Remember to not have NSAIDs or aspirins on having abdominal cramps.


Drink soda water

Get a soda bottle or add a pinch of baking soda powder to a glass of water and drink it. You can also prepare a solution with 8 ounces of club soda and juice of half lemon. Stir it slowly and drink it. It offers relief from stomach cramps arising from dyspepsia and constipation.

Visit a doctor if pain and discomfort persist despite trying the home remedies.
