Ornidazole is a prescription drug available from your pharmacy store only with the prescription of a qualified medical practitioner.

What is ornidazole?

Ornidazole is an anti infective / antibacterial and antiprotozaol drug.

Common uses of ornidazole

Ornidazole is used in the treatment of following conditions

  • Anaerobic infections both pre& post operatively
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Amoebic dysentery 
  • Amoebic liver abscess
  • Hepatic and intestinal amoebiasis
  • Other protozoan infection like Giardiasis, Trichomoniasis 

How to use ornidazole

Take ornidazole exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you do not understand ask your pharmacist, nurse or doctor to explain them to you.

Take oral dose of ornidazole after meals with 1 glass of water at regular intervals as prescribed by your doctor.
Take suspension on empty stomach 1 hr before or 2 hrs after meals.

Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better.  

You must complete the entire course of medication to get maximum benefit; else the infection will not clear completely and in due course result in development of resistance. 

What should I discuss with my health care provider before taking ornidazole?

Inform your doctor if you are using any OTC or any prescription drugs like

  1. Cimetidine( anti histamine)
  2. Oral anti coagulants( warfarin)
  3. Anti convulsants (phenytoin, phenbarbitone)
  4.  Mood stabilizers ( Lithium) 

Inform your doctor if you have following medical conditions as ornidazole should be used cautiously in the below mentioned conditions

  1. Seizure disorder
  2. Multiple sclerosis
  3. Kidney disease or liver disease

When not to take ornidazole

Do not use ornidazole if you are hypersensitive to it. 

What are the precautions I should follow for ornidazole?

Old people:

Pregnant woman: Ornidazole belongs to FDA pregnancy category C. This means that ornidazole may harm an unborn baby if used during pregnancy but potential benefit may warrant use of the drug in pregnant woman despite potential risks. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception.
Lactating women: It is not known whether ornidazole passes into breast milk or if it could harm the baby. Do not take ornidazole with out first talking to doctor if you are breast feeding a baby.

Do not drink alcohol when on ornidazole and at least for 3 days after stopping the medication as it could lead to antabuse like reaction characterized by flushing, tingling& numbness, fever, nausea and vomiting, hypotension.

Doses for ornidazole

Use as directed by your physician, your physician prescribes depending on the severity of disease.

Use the complete course of medication as prescribed by your physician even though you feel better after one or two days of usage of medication.
For detailed dosage information, consult your doctor who will prescribe you depending on the severity of the disease.

What about if I missed the dose of ornidazole

If it is almost the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at same time to cover up the missed dose.

What should I do if I over dosage ornidazole

In case of overdose contact your nearest poison control centre or emergency medical centre for immediate care by physician. The overdose symptoms of ornidazole are not known.

What are the common side effects of ornidazole?

Ornidazole may causes following side effects like

  • Abnormal metallic taste
  • Diarrhea 
  • Drowsiness 
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Headache 
  • Sleep disturbances 


When to consult the health expert about the side effects of ornidazole

Consult your doctor immediately if notice following symptoms.
  • Allergic reaction like swollen lips, hives, difficulty in breathing, rashes peeling of skin, blistering etc
  • Severe diarrhea associated with bloody stools
  • Tingling & numbness in extremities
  • Confusion, dizziness, poor coordination
  • Tremors , rigidity
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin & eyes)  

How do I store ornidazole?

Store ornidazole at room temp (15 – 30 degrees C). Avoid excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight, never store in the bathroom.Keep it out of reach of children. Make sure that any leftover portion is disposed off safely.

What is the most important information I should know about ornidazole

Do not drink alcohol when on ornidazole and at least for 3 days after stopping the medication as it could lead to antabuse like reaction characterized by flushing, tingling& numbness, fever, nausea and vomiting. 

Antibiotics usually cause mild diarrhea. Consult your doctor immediately if it is severe, associated with mucus or bloody stools, as it could be sign of new infection or pseudomembranous colitis.
Ornidazole can cause drowsiness. Avoid activities which require you to be alert.
Your doctor may advise you to undergo lab test like total leukocyte count and liver function test before and after starting ornidazole to look for side effects
If you are planning to undergo any surgery inform your surgeon regarding the use of ornidazole medication as it may increase the effect of anesthetic drugs..
