Ornidazole is an antiamoebic agent that is given to patients with amoebic dysentery.

People who are hypersensitive to Ornidazole or other nitroimidazole drugs should avoid it. It comes under Pregnancy Category C. Thus, one should exert caution when pregnant. Lactating women should also refrain from use of Ornidazole.

The drug may cause dizziness, headaches and tremors. Thus, one should avoid driving or operating machinery. Patients with renal and hepatic impairment should also exert caution when using the drug. Precautions have to be taken for patients of CNS diseases such as epilepsy or multiple sclerosis.

Ornidazole is an anti-bacterial, anti-infection and anti-protozoal drug. It is prescribed to treat different health conditions due to anaerobic infections, bacterial vaginosis, amoebic liver abscess, amoebic dysentery, hepatic amoebias, giardiasis, trichomoniasis and Crohn’s disease.

Dosage and When To Take

The drug is available in the form of tablets. These tablets are to be taken by mouth. It can also be given intravenously in the form of an infusion, if required. Dosage for adults 0.5 g to 1.5 g for 5 to 10 days, once a day, according to the type of parasitic infection.

In case of children, 25 mg/kg to 40 mg/kg as a single dose for 5 to 10 days, depending on the type of infection.

Hemodialysis patients can be given a supplemental dose of about 50% of the usual dose before they undergo dialysis. Patients with hepatic disorders may require a double interval period between doses.

The tablets need to be taken after meals with plenty of water. Never chew, break, or dissolve the tablet.
