Do not use labetalol in the following conditions. 

  • Second and third degree heart block
  • Heart failure
  • Slow heart beat (Bradycardia)
  • Asthma

Children: 
Safety and effectiveness has not been established in labetalol
 

Old people: 
Elderly patients above 60 years old have experienced side effects like low blood pressure, lightheadedness, drowsiness. Usage of labetalol in old people is cautioned and it should be under supervision of doctor.
 
Pregnant woman:
Labetalol belongs to FDA pregnancy category C. This means that labetalol may harm an unborn baby if used during pregnancy but potential benefit may warrant use of the drug in pregnant woman despite potential risks. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception.
 
Lactating women:
It is not known whether labetalol passes into breast milk or if it could harm the baby. Do not take labetalol with out first talking to doctor if you are breast feeding a baby.

Labetalol is available in the form of tablets and i.v solution
 

Doses for labetalol

Orally: 100 mg two times in a day. Maintenance dose is 200 – 400mg two times in a day. 
 

What about if I missed the dose of labetalol

If it is almost the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at same time to cover up the missed dose. 

 
 
In case of overdose of labetalol contact your nearest poison control centre or emergency medical centre for immediate care by physician.

  • Ortho static hypotension
  • Irregular heart beat

How do I store labetalol?

Store labetalol at room temp (25 degrees C / 77 degrees F). Avoid excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight, never store in the bathroom.

Keep it out of reach of children. Make sure that any left over portion is disposed off safely.
