Uses of this medication:

Chloramphenicol is used for typhoid fever. It is also used in meningococcal infections in cephalosporin allergic patients.

Chloramphenicol is also used in rickettsial infections in pregnant patients.

Chloramphenicol is used in tetracycline allergic patients and renally impaired patients.

Ophthalmic form of chloramphenicol is also used to treat certain some bactrerial infections of the eye.

How to use this medication:

It is usually given by injection by your doctor.

Chloramphenicol cause bone marrow suppression which is dose related and rarely cause aplastic anemia which is non dose related.

Hypersensitivity reactions like skin rash and rarely angioedema or anaphylaxis.

Chloramphenicol causes gray baby syndrome.


Dosage and Missed Dose:


Use as directed by your physician, your physician prescribe depending on the severity of disease.

Use the complete course of medication as prescribed by your physician even though you feel better after one or two days of usage of medication.


Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at same time to cover up the missed dose



Chloramphenicol should be stored at room temperature between (15-30 degrees C). Store it in a place where it won’t be exposed to excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight never store in bathroom. Keep it out of reach of children. Make sure that any leftover portion is disposed of safely.


General information

Chloramphenicol is only effective against the bacteria. It is not used to treat viral infections for ex common cold.

Chloramphenicol effects blood sugar levels. Diabetic patients needs to check the blood sugar levels and ask the doctor to to adjust the diabetic medication if required.
