Buspiron is prescription drug. It is sold from the pharmacy store only in the presence of written instructions known as prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.

What is buspirone?

Buspiron belongs to group of drugs called anxiolytics. 

Common uses of buspirone

Buspiron is used in the treatment of anxiety. It helps to calmdown, relax, less irritable and to sleep well. 

Take buspiron as directed, do not take in longer duration or larger dose than prescribed by your doctor.
Buspiron can be taken with or without food. Take buspiron at the same time every day.
Limit the amount of grape fruit juice while taking buspiron. Grape fruit juice increase the blood concentration of buspiron.

When not to take buspirone

Do not take buspiron if you are suffering from kidney or liver disease.  

Children: Buspiron should not be given to children less than 18 years old.
Old people: Safety and effectiveness is similar to those of younger patients. Due to sensitivity in older people some caution is advised while usage of buspiron.
Pregnant woman:
Buspiron belongs to FDA pregnancy category B. This means that buspiron is safe during pregnancy and is not expected to cause any harm to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception. 
Lactating women:
It is not known whether buspiron passes into breast milk or if it could harm the baby. Do not take buspiron with out first talking to doctor if you are breast feeding baby.  
Other: While taking buspiron consume alcohol moderately  

What are the dosage forms buspirone is available in the market

Buspiron is available in the form of tablets.

Doses for buspirone

Buspiron 5 mg tablets 2 – 3 times / day.

What about if I missed the dose of buspirone

If it is almost the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at same time to cover up the missed dose.


In case of overdose contact your nearest poison control centre or emergency medical centre for immediate care by physician.

Over dosage symptoms of buspiron are 
Nausea , vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision
Side effects for buspiron are 

Nausea , vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, restless ness, blurred vision, difficult in falling sleep.  

When to consult the health expert about the side effects of buspirone

If any of the above side effects become worse stop the medication and consult the doctor immediately. 

Store allopurinol at room temp (15 – 30 degrees C / 59 – 86 degrees F). Avoid excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight, never store in the bathroom. Keep it out of reach of children. Make sure that any left over portion is disposed off safely.  

What is the most important information I should know about buspirone

Do not use buspiron if you have kidney or liver problems. 

Buspiron causes drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery or do any activities which require mental alertness.
Do not stop taking buspiron abruptly unless your doctor advises.   

Do not use buspiron if you have used MAO inhibitors with in past 14 days.
