Bacampicillin is a prodrug of ampicillin that belongs to the penicillin antibiotic group.

What should I know before taking this drug

How to take it

Bacampicillin is taken with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Take the drug at evenly spaced intervals during the day and night to balance the medicine level in the blood.

Adverse reactions/side effects

Common and mild side effects of the bacampicillin that one may experience include:

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • White patches on the tongue
  • Vaginal yeast infection that causes itching, discharge, etc. from the vagina
  • Sore mouth or tongue
  • Black, ‘hairy tongue’

Some severe side effects of bacampicillin that require immediate medical attention include:

  • A severe allergic reaction like shortness of breath, hives, swelling of the lips, face, tongue, etc.
  • Watery diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Unexplained bruising

Precautions

Pregnant women

Do not take the medicine if you are pregnant without speaking to your doctor. Bacampicillin falls under the FDA pregnancy category B. This means, it is not harmful for the baby, but requires medical opinion before taking the medicine.

Also, the drug tends to lower the effectiveness of the birth control pills. Thus, if you are not planning on pregnancy, make sure you use other methods of prevention while using bacampicillin.

Lactating women

Bacampicillin is excreted through breast milk. Thus, speak to your doctor before taking bacampicillin, if you are nursing a baby.

Other

Tell your doctor about any underlying kidney disease, stomach disease or infectious mononucleosis. This is because such conditions may increase your chances of side effects.

What should I do if

I miss dose(s)

Take the dose as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one missed. Never double dose on bacampicillin.

I take an overdose

Symptoms of overdose include pain in muscle, pain in fingers and toes, loss of feeling in the fingers or toes, seizures, coma, confusion, agitation, muscle spasms.

If these symptoms are experienced, call the emergency medical care immediately.

Drug interactions

Bacampicillin can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. It also decreases the immunological response to typhoid vaccine. Also tell your doctor if you are taking or have very recently taken any of the following drugs:

  • Cholestyramine or colestipol
  • Methotrexate
  • Allopurinol
  • Probenecid
  • Other antibiotics like minocycline, doxycycline, etc.

Doses

In case of susceptible infections the patient is given 400-800mg of bacampicillin 2 to 3 times a day.

In case of uncomplicated gonorrhea with probenecid, 1.6 g bacampicillin as a single dose.

Storage

Store bacampicillin at room temperature in a cool and dry place.
