Amantadine is available at your pharmacy store only with the prescription of a registered medical practitioner.
 
Amantadine is pronounced as a-MAN-ta-deen
 
Amantadine is an anti infective / antiviral and an anti-Parkinson medication.
 
Amantadine used in the treatment and prophylaxis of influenza A infections.
 
It is also used as anti Parkinson medication to treat Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson like symptoms which include stiffness, rigidity, tremors etc
 
Take Amantadine medication exactly as directed by your doctor. If do not understand these instructions ask your pharmacist to explain them to you. 
Take oral dose with or immediately after meal with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.
 
Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of medication. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely and in due course may cause resistance to develop against the drug which will be difficult to treat.
 
When used as anti Parkinson medication, do not stop the drug without your doctor’s advice as it will worsen the Parkinson’s symptoms.
 
  • Always remember to inform your health expert if you are currently taking any prescription like anti convulsants,psychiatric medication, antihistamines( diphenhydramine), caffeine , stimulants or OTC
  • Inform your doctor if you have following medical conditions as Amantadine should be used cautiously in the below mentioned conditions
    1. Renal impairment
    2. Liver disease
    3. Seizure disorder
    4. Glaucoma
    5. Heart failure
    6. Psychiatric illness or history of suicide attempt
When not to take amantadine
Do not use amantiadine if you are allergic to it or you have eye problems.

What are the precautions I should follow for amantadine?

Children: Extreme caution is advised in using children less than one year old.

Old people: Older people may be more sensitive to adverse effects of amantadine, should be given under medical supervision.

Pregnant woman: Amantadine belongs to FDA pregnancy category C. This means that amantadine may harm an unborn baby if used during pregnancy but potential benefit may warrant use of the drug in pregnant woman despite. potential risks. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception.
 
Lactating women: It is not known whether amantadine passes into breast milk or if it could harm the baby. Do not take amantadine with out first talking to doctor if you are breast feeding a baby.
 
Other:
Avoid alcohol as it increases the side effects of amantadine.
 
 
 
Use as directed by your physician, your physician prescribes depending on the severity of disease.
 
Use the complete course of medication as prescribed by your physician even though you feel better after one or two days of usage of medication.
 
For detailed dosage information consult your doctor, as your doctor will prescribe depending on the condition and severity of the disease.
 
If it is almost the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at same time to cover up the missed dose
 
In case of overdose contact your nearest poison control centre or emergency centre for immediate care of physician.
 
You may experience following symptoms like
  • Severe headache
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Tremors
  • Palpitations
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Blurred vision
Amantadine may cause following side effects like
  • Nausea 
  • Abdominal pain
  • Drowsiness
  • Giddiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Anxiety, nervousness
  • Rigidity
In case you experience following symptoms consult your doctor immediately.
  • Allergic reaction like swollen lips, rashes, hives, difficulty in breathing.
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Increased rigidity
  • Tremors 
  • Palpitations
  • Suicidal thoughts, nervousness
  • Decreased amount of urine
  • Suicidal thoughts
Store amantadine at room temp (15 – 30 degrees C). Avoid excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight, never store in the bathroom.
Keep it out of reach of children. Make sure that any leftover portion is disposed off safely.
 
When on amantadine medication do not take Flu Mist nasal influenza live vaccine as it may not be effective. If you plan to take it stop the medication for at least 48 hrs before taking the vaccine. Also inform your doctor if you have taken the vaccine within 14 days before starting amantadine medication.
 
Amantadine medication impairs thought process or reactions. Therefore avoid activities which require you to be alert.
 
Your doctor may advise you to undergo laboratory test like renal function test complete blood counts periodically to look for side effects.
 
Elderly individual are prone for side effects due to their decreased renal function. Therefore caution is advised.
