What is heart disease?
Heart disease is a broad term used to describe several types of cardiovascular diseases. These can be fatal. But the good news is that heart disease can be treated and prevented with proper measures.

There are four types of heart diseases:
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Arrhythmia
  • Cardiomyopathy

Who is at risk for heart disease?
Following are those who are at risk for heart disease.

  • The elderly who are 65 years old
  • Men are at more risk than women
  • Those families where heart disease runs in genes

How does cholesterol contribute to heart disease? 
High cholesterol contributes to heart disease. When fat deposits filled with bad cholesterol build up in the arteries, they cause a lack of blood flow and oxygen to the heart, which results in heart disease.

How can high blood pressure contribute to heart disease?
High blood pressure can lead to heart attack. High blood pressure causes an increased pressure on the kidneys and causes the heart to work harder. This then increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and even kidney disease. Hence, monitoring blood pressure on a regular basis is very important.

What is coronary artery disease?
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common form of heart disease. It occurs when the coronary arteries are narrowed with cholesterol or fat. This condition is referred to as atherosclerosis.

Coronary arteries supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart. When the arteries are narrowed the heart does not get enough oxygen, the heart muscle is injured, and this results in heart attack.

What should people eat for a heart healthy diet?
A heart healthy diet consists of limited amounts of processed foods, more fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats.

How does body weight contribute to heart disease?
Being overweight can contribute to the development of heart disease. The heart has to work harder in people who are overweight. This puts a strain on the heart of the overweight person. Those who are overweight may also have a higher cholesterol level and higher blood pressure. Hence, obese people have higher chances of developing heart disease.
