  Pregnancy and gums

Q) Does pregnancy affect gums?

A) During pregnancy, body’s hormone levels rise considerably. A condition called ‘Gingivitis’ occurs, which is especially common during, second to 8th month of pregnancy. It causes red, puffy or tender gums that tend to bleed when one brushes. An increased level of progesterone causes this sensitivity. A dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings during second trimester or early third trimester to avoid problems.
