Q) I had jaundice in september 2009. After three months it got cured but still my bilirubin level is 1.2 and sgpt is 45. I want to know if i am still having the jaundice and i need to go for treatment.
A) Jaundice in itslef is not a disease but is a manifestation of many underlying disease which causes increase yellow pigment, billirubin in the body. It is important to know what was the cause of jaundice in your case. Have you get the investigations done? If yes, please let us know the reports.
It may be a result of Hepatitis A,B,C, or D and other conditions like stone in gall bladder and blockage in the tube in the bile drainage system.
In general the treatment for jaundice is to correct the underlying pathology (blockage, stone) or we only give supportive and symptomatic treatment and the condition is self limiting like Hepatitis A. In some diseases the condition continues to progress even after jaundice is over, like Hepatitis B.
Therefore, it is very important to get the examination done by a physician.
Generally the level of billirubin decreases gradually and it may take some time. And also the color of skin and sclera may take longer to become normal.
Billirubin level of 1.2 may not be a matter of too much worry, provided the underlying condition is not serious.
