Q) My mother is 85 years old. She has high blood pressure. Today it is over 300 and it came down to 175. Now she is taking carvediol 12.5 mg and diovan htc 320mg. Can you suggest any better medication than what she is taking now.
A) Blood pressure is a condition which needs constant medication as you might know, but it can be controlled well. There are many classes of drugs available for this and are given according to level of blood pressure, cause, other associated conditions etc. The best option for your mother needs to look into all aspects which should be done by a physician. It will require a complete examination and investigation which I feel that have already been done.
What are the other parameters, like cholesterol, HDL and LDL etc. is thyroid under control now? Has doctor restricted salts etc? I would like to know more about these.
Ideally the blood pressure should not go very high, it may lead to complications which at this age may be dangerous. I would suggest you talk to the treating physician about it and he may adjust dose and add a drug or change. It will help maintain the desired blood pressure level.
