What is an esophageal manometry test

Q) My doctor has asked me to do  Esophageal manometry test may i know what it is and why we need to do this test?

A) Esophageal manometry measures pressure within the esophagus. This may be recommended if there is a swallowing problem due to improper working of muscles in the esophagus.

During esophageal manometry, a tiny, pressure-sensitive tube is inserted through the nose or mouth and into the esophagus. There, it measures, the effects of muscle contractions when swallowed.
