Q) In my recent lipid profile test my cholesterol levels are high. I would like to know if I can use statin for the treatment
A) There is limited evidence to support the use of statin regimens in the treatment of elevated cholesterols and/or multiple atherosclerotic risk factors without the history of coronary artery disease (CAD).
Although a few trials have supported the use of high dose statin therapy as it reduces the thickness of the carotid intima media or the risk factors of atherosclerosis, definitive conclusions about their use cannot be drawn as the number of clinically apparent events was far too low.
Based on the evidence currently available, the use of higher dose statin therapy should be restricted to patients with established CAD.
