Ayurveda can stop cancer cell growth
As per the British health website cancerresearchuk.org, several medical research organizations carried out studies on several compounds such as Sanjeevani, Mangosteen, Pomegranate, Withaferin A, Indian Frankincense, MAK-4 and MAK-5 – and the results were very encouraging.
In 2011, in the US, research was done on a compound called Withaferin A (WA) taken from the Ayurvedic medicinal plant Withania somnifera. They found that WA stopped the growth of some types of breast cancer cells. It also halted the growth of breast cancer in mice. Numerous other research studies support these findings.
An Indian study researched selaginella bryopteris, a traditional Indian herb, often referred to as Sanjeevani. The study concluded that compounds taken from the herb stopped the growth of cancer cells, and also reduced growth of skin tumours in mice.
A recent US research study studied the comound acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid or AKBA, which was extracted from the gum resin of the boswellia serrata known as salai guggal or Indian frankincense. Traditionally, salai guggal is used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat inflammatory conditions. Researchers found that AKBA slowed the growth of different bowel cancers in mice.
In Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, the mangosteen fruit has a long history of medicinal use. Researchers found that alpha mangosteen – extracted from the outside layer of the fruit – kills various types of cancer cells. Japanese researchers also tested effectiveness of alpha mangostin in mice, and found that alpha mangosteen halted the growth of breast cancer in mice.
The red and sweet fruit Pomegranate is considered as a sacred fruit in some world religions. Many cultures and systems of medicine, including Ayurvedic medicine, used it for many types of health problems. As per research, pomegranate extracts have anti cancer properties against bowel, prostate, and liver cancer.
MAK-4 and MAK-5
Some laboratory studies have carried out lab work on the Ayurvedic herbal remedies called MAK-4 and MAK-5. The remedies indicate some ability to control tumours in rats and cancer cells in lab dishes.
How Ayurvedic medicine manages cancer diagnosis
Ayurvedic practitioners will first note down and analyze your medical history asses your doshas or mind-body types. To do this they examine your lips, tongue, and nails. They look inside ears, eyes, ears, mouth and nostrils. Your rectum and genital area may also be examined. The Ayurvedic therapist listens to your lungs and heart, and takes your pulse.
Emotions, relationships with other people and even the time and the seasons are taken into consideration. All this study is undertaken to treat cancer – to balance physical and emotional elements - and only then a decisive treatment is arrived at for a patient.
Healing cancer with herbs
Ayurvedic herbs have a lot of potential in encouraging the healing process and can even destroy cancer cells. This property of an herb is called the cytotoxic effect. Studies indicate that such herbs have cytotoxic or antineoplastic (preventing cancerous cell growth) activity – and some have shown their exact effect. In classical Ayurvedic literature, there are lists of complex formulations to treat many types of arbuda or malignancy.
Many of the herbs that have the potential to heal cancer are very powerful purifiers – and remove from the body harmful toxins or dosha and ama – which can help in reversing cancer.
Some of the powerful Ayurvedic herbs having the potential to destroy tumors include red clover, turmeric, burdock root, dandelion root, guggul, and chaparral. Green tea, as per a Chinese study, is known to reduce the incidence of different cancers including the most impossible to cure - pancreatic cancer - and also to prevent colon, stomach, colon, lung and breast cancer.
Cat's claw or Uncaria tomentosa has been shown to lessen cancerous cellular growth. Manjishta or Rubia cordifolia can help in treating uterine and ovarian cancer. Madagascan Periwinkle or Vinca Roseus is an example of an herb from which many anti-cancer drugs have been produced. The young leaves of Periwinkle contain two phytochemicals used to produce the drugs vincristine and vinblastine.
Side effects of Ayurvedic medicine
In conventional Allopathic cancer treatment – control and curative methods such as chemotherapy are used despite painful side effects. Unfortunately, people adopting Ayurveda for cancer treatment should also beware of side effects.
Some herbal medicines are safe but not all of them. A few Ayurvedic remedies contain harmful heavy metals such as zinc or lead. So, it would be best to approach your local doctor to find out about a particular Ayurvedic formula to treat, prevent or control cancer.
