Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Cancer

The cervical cancer tumor grows by extending upward to the endometrial cavity and downward to the vagina and laterally to the pelvic walls. The tumor can also extend to the bladder and rectum directly.

The first symptom observed is vaginal bleeding.

The common symptoms include

  • Vaginal discomfort,
  • Malodorous discharge and
  • Dysuria.

Other signs and symptoms of cervical cancer include the following:

  • Constipation, hematuria, fistula and urethral obstruction.
  • Leg edema, pain suggests lymphatic or vascular obstruction due to tumor formation and hydronephrosis, which suggests that pelvic wall is also affected.
  • As the disease advances, the cervix shows abnormal appearance with erosion, ulcer or mass development.
  • Rectum may also show an external mass or bleeding from the tumor.
  • Urinary problems arise due to blockage of kidney or ureter.
  • If metastasis has occurred to liver, then hepatomegaly (enlargement of the liver) is observed.1
