Acetaminophen over dosage
Decongestants and cough syrups most of the time contain acetaminophen. If you are already using acetaminophen for fever or for any reason, before using cough syrups, decongestants always check the label or ask your pharmacist to avoid acetaminophen over dosage.
Sore throats
Sore throats are common with a cold and the flu. If a sore throat is part of these illnesses, it is most likely caused by a virus and a throat swab is not needed.
Cough
Most coughs are due to viruses. Antibiotics will not help! Sometimes a cough can be due to pneumonia. If your doctor suspects pneumonia, an X-ray should be taken and antibiotics are usually prescribed.
Salt water solution
Salt water solution can be used to relieve a stuffy nose. Salt water solution helps remove mucus from the nose, reduce nasal stuffiness and relieve nasal irritation. Nasal solution can be made by dissolving 0.5 tsp of salt and 0.5 tsp of baking soda in 1 cup of warm water with temp about 37 degree Celsius. This is available with out prescription in the pharmacy as nasal drops and nasal sprays.
Ear infections in children
Up to 80% of children with ear infections will get better without antibiotics. Wash your hands frequently and teach your children to wash their hands. Always wash your hands after using the bathroom, changing diapers or helping a child use the toilet. You can give OTC pain reliever acetaminophen to your child to have relief from uncomfortable pain.
Antibiotic resistance
Use of antibiotics when they are not needed such as using antibiotics to treat viral infection Ex: Cold and Flu can lead to antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance means bacteria get the resistance against the antibiotics not you. If a healthy person who never taken the antibiotics get infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria, it is hard to treat him.
Benefits of eating apple
Following are the benefits for apple eating: 1) Apple is a rich source of antioxidants like flavonoids, polyphenols. 2) Apple can reduce the cholesterol level. 3) Apple contains minerals and vitamins which strengthen the blood. 4) Apple increases the memory by increasing the production of neurotransmitter acetyl cholin 5) The skin of apple contain pectin which helps remove toxic substances from the body.
Fiber and its role in digestion
Fiber is a type of component which helps in digestion. Fiber is not digestible. Fiber keeps digestive system healthy. It aids in removal of toxins and waste from stomach and intestines so that you are free from diseases. High fiber content diet prevents constipation. Fiber help decrease the risk of colon disease like colon cancer. Daily requirement of fiber is 25 to 30 grams per day. Sources of the fiber are Whole grains, Cereals, Nuts and seeds, Legumes, Fruits, Vegetables.
Role of potassium to keep you healthy
Potassium is a mineral; Potassium is required for normal bodily functions. Potassium maintains pH of the body, normal water balance, and normal muscle growth. Potassium keeps nervous system healthy and maintains normal brain function. Banana is a rich source of potassium. Other sources are water melon, spinach, raisins, dates, fish and salmon.
Risks of drinking alcohol during pregnancy
Drinking too much alcohol may cross the placenta and lead to mental and physical birth defects. The risks include changing the baby face and organs like heart, kidney, liver & eyes. Alcohol can also affect nervous system which may lead learning disabilities. FASD (Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders) and FAS (Fetal alcohol syndrome) are the terms we use for describing the problems associated with alcohol during pregnancy.
