Budesonide is a prescription drug available from your pharmacy store only with the prescription of a qualified medical practitioner.
Budesonide is pronounced as: bue DES oh nide
Budesonide is a steroid / corticosteroid. It prevents the release of substance which causes inflammation.
Budesonide is used in the treatment of asthma, rhinitis, nasal polyps
Budesonide is also used to treat crohn’s disease.
How to use budesonide
Take budesonide exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If do not understand these instructions ask your pharmacist, nurse or doctor to explain them to you.
Do not take the medication in larger amounts or for longer duration than recommended by your doctor.
Take budesonide with food.
Budesonide spray if you are using it first time tilt the bottle up and down slowly so that the foam does not form and spray for 8 times in to the air before using in the nostrils.
Do not skip doses or stop taking budesonide without consulting your doctor.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any of the following medical conditions as budesonide should be cautiously used.
- Viral, bacterial and fungal infections
- If you are recently got a vaccination.
- Liver or kidney disease
- Osteoporosis
Do not take budesonide if you are allergic ( Chest congestion, Difficult breathing) to it.
Children: Budesonide should not be used in children
Old people:
Pregnant woman:
1st trimester
Budesonide belongs to FDA pregnancy category B. This means that budesonide is safe during pregnancy and is not expected to cause any harm to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception.
2nd and 3rd trimesters
Budesonide belongs to FDA pregnancy category C. This means that budesonide may harm an unborn baby if used during pregnancy but potential benefit may warrant use of the drug in pregnant woman despite potential risks. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception.
Lactating women: It is not known whether budesonide passes into breast milk or if it could harm the baby. Do not take budesonide with out first talking to doctor if you are breast feeding a baby.
Other:
Avoid taking grape fruit juice.
Budesonide is available in the form of capsule, inhaler, spray, respules, enema. Your doctor will prescribe depending on the severity and condition of the disease.
Use budesonide as directed by your physician, your physician prescribes depending on the severity of disease.
Use the complete course of medication as prescribed by your physician even though you feel better after one or two days of usage of medication.
If it is almost the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take two doses of budesonide at same time to cover up the missed dose.
In case of overdose of budesonide contact your nearest poison control centre or emergency medical centre for immediate care by physician.
The following are the side effects you may experience with budesonide
- Head ache, dizziness
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset
- nervousness
If you experience any of the following side affects stop the budesonide medication and consult your doctor immediately.
Severe head ache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
Store budesonide at room temp (15 – 30 degrees C). Avoid excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight, never store in the bathroom.
Keep it out of reach of children. Make sure that any leftover portion is disposed off safely.
Prolonged use of budesonide causes dependence. Do not stop using suddenly as it causes withdrawal symptoms.
Budesonide lower your immune system. Avoid contact with the people who have the cold or infection.
Do not take live vaccine while you are taking the budesonide.
To avoid osteoporosis while taking budesonide take enough calcium, vitamin D and avoid smoking and alcohol.
Budesonide affect the blood sugar levels. Check the blood sugar levels while taking the medication.
