Hypothyroidism

Overview of hypothyroidism

When there is a lack of sufficient thyroid hormone, the body suffers from hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). The thyroid hormone is principally responsible for running the metabolic activity of the body. When a person suffers from hypothyroidism, his body would show symptoms that are associated with slow metabolism. The lack of thyroid hormone affects the whole body and makes the patient feel tired and weak. If hypothyroidism is left untreated, it can raise the cholesterol levels in the body and the patient is likely to suffer from heart attack or stroke.

During pregnancy, if hypothyroidism is not properly treated, it can harm the baby. Approximately, 10 million Americans suffer from this common medical condition. Around 10% of the women population suffers from some form of thyroid hormone deficiency. However, the good news is that thyroid function tests are available and they can accurately diagnose hypothyroidism. Moreover, the treatment of hypothyroidism is usually simple, safe and effective once the proper dosage of synthetic thyroid hormone is established.
