Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose
Self-monitoring of bloodglucose (SMBG) is a componentof effective diabetic management. Through SMBG patients can evaluate theirindividual response to therapy and assess whether glycemic targetsare being achieved. Daily SMBG is importantfor patients treated with insulin to monitor and preventasymptomatic hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. For T1DM patients and pregnant women with GDM, SMBGis recommended three or more times daily.
Monitoring in T2DM need not be as intensive as with T1DM except when the routine pattern is disturbed such as during intercurrent illness, changes in medication and diet. The ideal SMBG for T2DM patients would be blood glucose estimation before and after each meal. A reasonable approach would include blood glucose estimation at different times of the day on 2–3 days each week.
