Diagnosis of GERD

Generally, GERD diagnosis is done symptomatically. The following diagnostics tests are carried out to confirm GERD:

Barium X-rays

This procedure requires the patient to swallow barium (contrast material) that fills the hollows of the digestive tract. The coating allows visualization of a silhouette of the shape and condition of the esophagus, stomach and upper intestine. X-rays can also reveal presence of a hiatal hernia, esophageal stricture or any growth.
Endoscopy

In esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), an optical system for visualization is swallowed and the lining of esophagus, stomach and upper intestine is examined as it progresses down the GI tract. Endoscopy can also reveal the presence of inflammation, stricture, Barrett’s esophagus or cancer.

Esophageal Acid Probe Test

In this test, the quantity of stomach acid in a patient suffering from GERD is compared to a normal person’s level of acid. This test is helpful when the clinician wants to quantify the reflux, as it allows the symptoms and the reflux episodes to be associated.
