Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety

Signs and symptoms depend on the specific type of anxiety disorder. In general, primary symptoms of anxiety disorder are fear and worry.

Signs and symptoms of anxiety disorder can also be based on emotional and physical behavior.

Emotional symptoms include:

  • Fear, uneasiness and dread
  • Impaired concentration
  • Feeling restlessness
  • Avoidance 
  • Irritability
  • Confusion
  • Behavioral problems
  • Nervousness
  • Self-consciousness and lack of confidence
  • Fear of dying
Physical symptoms include the following.
  • Palpitations
  • Extreme chills
  • Cold and clammy hands
  • Stomach upset or queasiness
  • Frequent urination and diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Tremors and twitches
  • Muscle tension
  • Fatigue

Anxiety attack

In severe conditions, a person may experience ‘anxiety attacks’. Anxiety attacks, also called as panic attacks are unexpected episodes of extreme fear and terror.

The affected person experiences a feeling, as if the attack would kill him. It affects the person without prior warning.1 Panic attacks may run in families. Such attacks are related to dysfunction in the respiratory system. They have irregularities in breathing, and are hypersensitive to carbondioxide.2
